The European project LIFE CAPT-TILE, funded by the European Union with a contribution of 1,972,776.00 euros, was launched with the aim of developing innovative and accessible solutions for green and sustainable architecture.
Coordinated by Industrie Cotto Possagno SPA, the project involves international partners and is part of the LIFE program, which aims to support climate and environmental action projects. The main goal is to improve the quality of life in cities and contribute to the fight against climate change, LIFE CAPT-TILE will introduce new technologies for the creation of green surfaces, such as roofs and facades, which are able to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and filter pollutants. LIFE CAPT-TILE, whose full name is “CO2 CAPTuring from nature-based building TILEs”, will last 48 months, starting on 1 June 2024 and ending on 31 May 2028.
The project focuses on the integration of innovative terracotta tiles with urban greening systems capable of hosting a layer of “mineral soil” that allows plants to grow on green surfaces, such as roofs and facades, contributing to the capture of CO2 from the atmosphere.
The solution, designed to be lightweight, modular and easy to install, aims to significantly reduce installation and maintenance costs, making green roofs and facades accessible also for residential buildings and low-income contexts.
The new technologies will be tested in two real installations: a green roof and a green facade, to demonstrate their feasibility and effectiveness.
The project involves a consortium of partners from Italy and Poland, including Industrie Cotto Possagno SPA (Italy), Officine Smac SPA (Italy), Università Politecnica delle Marche (Italy), Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy), Bergamo Tecnologie SPZOO (Poland) and Azienda Territoriale Edilizia Residenziale della Provincia di Padova ATER (Italy).
LIFE CAPT-TILE represents a concrete response to the need for greener and more sustainable cities. Each roof will be able to absorb several kg of CO2 and dust per year, improving air quality and creating new habitats for native flora and fauna, contributing to the conservation of urban biodiversity. Furthermore, the introduction of green spaces will help improve the psychophysical well-being of citizens.
The project will be supported by the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and the Environment (CINEA) for all 4 years of the course.
With a total funding of over €3.2 million, the project represents a significant step towards creating resilient and sustainable cities, benefiting the environment and public health.
